 G4 TIFF viewer?

The US Patent Office has older docs in G4 TIFF format. AOL doesn't open 'em.
The site lists what it says are appropriate readers, like Acrobat and Word
(huh?), but they don't work for me as helper apps (all I get is an image icon.
Maybe too old versions...). I asked AOL (dumb move), and after one nonsense
response they sent me to their viewers section - and I still have no idea what
will open these.
I expect the answer is ridiculously simple.
I await the wisdom of this group.

Jerry

You may find it useful to instal Irfan,
a freeware viewer (for most types of
graphic file format) available from

 G4 TIFF viewer?
Already had it - no help.

What I want is whatever helper app (AOL or IE) will open these G4 tiffs ONLINE.
I'm not sure I could download just a graphic (?) from a web page, but I also
don't want to download a bunch of stuff just to see if it's what I want.

Try this: go to:

http://patimg1.uspto.gov/.piw?Docid=03144007&homeurl=http%3A%2F%2F164....
100.11%2Fnetacgi%2Fnph-Parser%3FSect2%3DPTO1%2526Sect2%3DHITOFF%2526p%3D1%
2526u%3D%25252Fnetahtml%25252Fsearch-bool.html%2526r%3D1%2526f%3DG%2526l%3

F3144007&PageNum=&Rtype=&SectionNum=&idkey=6FE3078597F4

(whew!!!) and tell me what you see. If you see anything other than a little
icon, please tell me how if you can...

Well, they make it pretty clear at the Patent Office web site, when you
go to the Viewers page you mentioned.  Word, Acrobat, etcetera, are for
those particular file types, *not* for .tiff files.

They link right there on the viewer page to a Viewer that will add-in
too your browser for TIFF viewing.  The link they give is:
http://www.mieweb.com/alternatiff/
The Alternatiff web page also has a link to other TIFF viewers.

Hmmm - missed that one. Will try it.
Were YOU able to see an image? If so, with what?

Yep, ALTERNATIFF works, albeit rather slowly. I can now view the images online.
Thanks for the info.

IRFANVIEW reads them fine once downloaded (even though its help files only
mention G3, not G4!), but it's apparently not a plugin itself. Maybe someday -
it's sure a great little program.

As before, could you view those images online with anything else?

Also, any particular difference between tif and tiff? So far, they seem
interchangeable...

ALTERNATIFF's website contains lots of info about .tiff and .tif images,
if you go through the many pages there, including the technical stuff.
TIFF format simply doesn't have much in the way of standards, so you
can't view all TIFFs with all supposed TIFF viewers.

No, I could not view the Patent Office Tiffs online, as I don't have
Alternatiff installed.....Quicktime 3.x plugin balks on them.  I haven't
tried Irfan because I haven't downloaded the file.

Note that at the Alternatiff site, they mention that the new Netscape
6.x doesn't work at the Patent Office web site......sounds like Netscape
6 is not ready for prime time.
