HELP!!!! My computer won't detect my CD and DVD drives

I don't understand what's wrong with my computer.  I have
a Compaq Presario 5310, 5000 series, Intel Celeron
processor 1.2Ghz and it came with Windows XP loaded in the
computer when I bought it.  For some reason Windows device
manager and My Computer doesn't detect my CD and DVD
hardware.  My brother checked the CBIOS (not sure if thats
what its called) setup when Windows is booting up...and
the CBIOS recognizes my drives.  When I go to the device
manager it says this about the drives when I check the
Properties:

"Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this
hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this
device."

The Troubleshooter says that it cannot assist me with this
problem.  What do I do?

HELP!!!! My computer won't detect my CD and DVD drives

Hi Mimi,

Save the file below to your hard drive. Navigate to where you saved it and double click the file. A confirmation dialog will appear when the script is done. You may need to reboot for the change to take effect.

1.XP detects CD/DVD drives but doesn't detect CDs or DVDs

I am running XP Pro. I have a Yamaha CRW-F1E and a Pioneer DVD-RW
106D.

Both these have worked perfectly well (ish) for months and months. All
of a sudden, and I can't recall adding any additional software, they
aren't working.

XP detects the drives, and I can see them in explorer, but it doesn
not detect any CDs or DVDs you put in. It just keeps saying that I
should put in a disk. Needless to say, can't read or write to either.
The drives are visible in XP, WMP and all third party buring software,
but none of them can detect any drive contents.

I have uninstalled all my third party writer software, I have
uninstalled all the drives, I have run registray cleaners, run a virus
scan and scanned for spyware.

I have run windows update and I am as up to date as one can be and as
clean as clean can be. Damn things still don't work. Drives visible,
disks not detected. Stick media in and you get the usual whirring and
whizzing.. but then nothing.

Before I go down the root of reinstalling the PC, can anyone offer any
guidance.. I am so frustrated.

Thanks in advance.
