 Location of the I386 folder

Hi,

As regards Win XP, what is the location of the I386
folder? On some machines, I find it to be C:\Windows. On
other systems, it is directly under the root.

Does this got to do with the manufacturer of the system?

Any help?

Did you do a search (Start, Search)?  I don't think you
are going to find it on a non-9x system.

Kas,

It was "convention" for system mfrs of Win9x machines to create a
C:\Windows\Options folder from which the end-user could load drivers,
re-install, etc.

The limited number of pre-installed WinXP systems that I have seen don't
seem to have the i386 folder installed on the HDD. [I don't recall seeing it
on NT4.0 or Win2K machines either, leading me to believe that it was only
done on "consumer targeted systems".]

There are no "rules" here, it was strictly a custom which might or might not
be followed by any particular mfr.

Hi Kas,
The I386 folder is on your XP-CD.
It is not automatically installed on your hard drive.
If you want it installed, first create a WinXP folder on your hard drive,
then Copy the I386 folder on the CD to the WinXP folder on your hard drive.
To make this the default location for references, go to Start, Run, and type
REGEDIT and hit enter.
Then click the following boxes:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Software
Microsoft
WindowsNT
Then highlite Current Version

In the right panel, double click SourcePath
Make the correct path to your new WinXP location.
Example: C:\WinXP
Then click File at the top and Exit.
REBOOT

Quinoa,

Please read what I posted earlier in this thread.

This is an OPTION that the system mfr MAY include, but it is NOT part of any
standard install.

It depends on the manufaturer. If you get a proper MS XP CD, then the
i386 folder is on the CD and not the C: drive. Also, some place the
files in a hidden partition which you can get to by press a given key
when you boot up (e.g. F10 for Compaq machines). Othertimes its place
somewhere on the hard disk.

Ah...does this mean that I won't need my XP CD to add/remove most
Windows components, because I have I386 on my drive? I could use some
extra coasters around the house. <g>

Windows NT, 2000 and XP supports more than Intel plaform. On Intel Platform,
they
keep drivers in I386 directory, on Alpha machine, it uses Alpha directory.

But Win9x OS only runs on Intel platform, so they always use Windows as
install directory.

1.Location of \I386 folder

I had a copy of the \I386 folder from my recovery CD on my boot
partition, C:, but I've now moved it to the D: partition. Could
someone please remind me where in XP I should specify this new path? I
seem to recall for example that XP needs to know it in order to
properly perform Run > sfc scannow, without pestering me to insert the
CD.
