A fix for XP folder views settings not saving

I've repeatedly had this bug in XP show up, and it was driving me
nutz!!!
No matter what view settings I wanted in certain folders, they
wouldn't stay saved!
For example, all my folders views are set to ICON view, but my recycle
bin, windows/temp, file search, and temp internet files folders are
set to DETAIL view. My Documents/My Pictures folders and subfolders
are set to thumbnail view...

Another note I should make, is I do all my folder browsing using
Windows Explorer, NOT My Computer.
Maybe the My Computer users don't run into this problem...I dunno

And I think, but Iam not 100% sure, that this folder view corruption
occurs when you browse really deep sub-folders....
I notice this happen when I was browsing in my Maya4 folders, which
have folders, within folders, within folders, within folders, within
folders....BAM, view settings are pooched!

Okay, for the fix
(This doesn't fix the XP bug, but it make XP remember the view setting
until you do something to trigger the bug again)
First, it's probably a good idea if you reset all your folders views
to one view setting before doing this...
From C:\ in  Windows Explorer, go to view, <your view preference>
Then go to tools, folder option, view, and Apply to all folders

Now, drag a shortcut to the desktop of all the affected folders, or
all the folders that you want to have a different view than the
general view setting you just applied (for me, it was My Pictures, and
Recycle Bin). I think this also works if you drag a shortcut of C:\
drive out of Explorer. (Thanks Dave!)
Close Explorer, then open one of the new shortcut folders you just
made. Set the view setting to your prefered style, close the folder,
and delete it.
Do this, one at a time, to all the shortcut folders you made that you
want to have a different view setting
And now, when you open and explore your windows folders, the view
settings are the way YOU want them!
:)

A fix for XP folder views settings not saving

While explorer is in the "My Computer" folder, set the View to

your chosen default style, then open My Computer, Tools menu, Options, View tab,

and click the button to make all folders the same.

Then check the box to "Remember each folders settings", and make your settings.

show up...

Me too...I was beta testing it. I didn't have an install running long
enough for this bug to appear. And neither did anyone else apparently!
lol
Even that "fix" I posted is only temperary...it still comes up all too
regularly

A fix for XP folder views settings not saving
Hi Mark,
your suggestion (check "Remember ...") sounds simple and straightforward (I
had the idea myself) ... unfortunately it doesn't work.
I have a similiar scenario as WuNgUn and exactly the same problem. After
browsing with the Explorer "deep" sub-folders, XP forgets all individual
folder view settings (really annoying ..).
Any good ideas are welcome - Guenther.

I did that, no difference.
Gee.  I just found I have another problem.
I'll post it in an appropriate topic.
Thanks, I'll keep piddling with this.

there was no NoSaveSetting entry in that section, and that's the only place
it should show up.
So, I added it.  Made sure it said value of 0, not null.

1.Folder View settings are not saved for floppy drives

I am using a Compaq Presario 8000T desktop computer running Win-XP Home
Edition.  Using Folder Options, I can easily set View to "remember each
folder's view settings."  Folders then open in the same size and with the
same settings that I established.  However, I cannot achieve the same
results with floppy drives (but could do this with the computer I just
upgraded from, which had Win98).  I have an internal Zip drive (Iomega 250mb
ATAPI) and an "A" drive for 3-1/2" floppies .  Both floppy drives react the
same way to the following procedures:

(1)  Every time I open a file from a floppy drive, it takes up much more
space on screen than when I previously used it.  I like to have 2 or 3 open
on screen for copying/pasting, and I like to place them side-by-side.
Therefore, I have to resize every time I insert a new disk.

(2)  In addition to size, the settings for viewing the list of documents
also changes.  I prefer either List or Details, but this continuously
reverts to Tiles on floppy drives (but not on the hard drive).  In fact,
this view changes if I have more than one folder on the floppy, move to a
new folder, then back to the original (all on the same disk) -- instant
change back to Tiles.

How can I change the View settings and have it "stick" for floppy drives
just as it does on the HD?

Thanks,
MaryL
