 CD-ROM burner doesn't recognize disc

My internal CD-ROM burner doesn't recognize that it has a
disc in it.  Then I bought an external CD-ROM burner.  It
made one disc, then it, too stopped recognizing the
disc.  I bought high speed, regular speed, expensive
discs, cheap discs.  Just about every disc they had and
tried them in each one and nothing works.  I keep getting
a message to "please insert empty disc"  Can anyone help
me fix this problem?  Thanks, Elizabeth

 CD-ROM burner doesn't recognize disc

Hi Elizabeth,
You didn't mention the speeds of your CD burners and if your using CD-R or
CD-RW disks so the following is just assumption. If you are using CD-R disks
it normally states on the package the certified speed that should be used to
write to them. Open my computer and right click the CD-RW drive and select
properties then select recording tab and at the bottom, under select a
speed, make sure it is not set any higher than the certified speed for your
CD-R disk. Of course this assumes your CD-RW is able to write at the
certified speed. I use XP Pro and have noticed the CD-RW drive software
built into the OS will not write as fast as the Nero software I was using
when I had Win98SE installed with the same CD-RW drive which is rated
40x12x48x. For instance with the Nero software I could write to a CD-R disk
certified 16x at 32x speed and it would write without problem, and be
recognized by my CD-R drive without problem, but with the XP Pro software
(Roxio I believe) it will only write at 16x. If I try to write at 32x it
will tell me it was written OK, but my CD-R drive will not recognize it.
Using CD-RW disks it may be different. With Nero I could write to a CD-RW
disk rated 12x at 12x without problem, but under XP Pro I could only write
at 8x without problem. I hope I have explained this so you can understand
it. Good luck.

Hi Elizabeth,

Right-click the CDRW drive in Windows Explorer or "My Computer" and select
properties. Go to the recording tab and ensure the option to enable
recording is checked.

I replaced my CD burner with Stomp Record Now Max and when I insert a blank
cd into my CD recorder the auto play dialog does not come up like it used to
with the HP Record Now program. I deleted the HP Record now Program. Is
there a way to register the new burner with XP so it recognizes the program.
Everything else on the program seem to work great.
Thanks
