1.COM ports prevent Standby

I have a Presario 5320US with Xp Pro installed.  When I try to use the
Standby feature it begins the process (it turns off the printer) and the
monitor screen briefly goes blank.  Then it immediately returns the screen
and gives the message: "The device driver for the 'Communications Port
(COM2)' device is preventing the machine from entering standby.  Please
close all applications and try again.  If the problem persists, you may need
to update this driver."  If I go into the device mgr and disable COM2 and
try Standby again I am given the same message, but it states that COM1 is
the problem this time.  Disabling COM1 and trying Standby returns a message
that the Modem is causing the problem.
I have a CNXT V92 Data Fax Voice modem
    PCTEL Platinum V.92 modem
Intel PRO/100 VM Network connection which has an ethernet cable
connecting this computer to a Presario 7470
A HotSync Manager cable for a Palm connected to a small port in the
back, I'm not sure what it is called. It is not USB, it looks like a
parallel port, but is smaller than that for a printer.
I have thought of using the Task Manager to disable the currently
running processes, but I am not very experienced with computers and it is
difficult to determine which processes are related to which programs due to
the ambiguous names used in the Task Manager.  I do not want to end a
process that will cause more problems than Standby is worth.
Something else interesting is that after I try Standby and it fails, my
mouse pointer disappears when it goes over text.  It is still moving because
it will appear on the other side of the screen when it passes out of the
text area.  The pointer is visible over buttons and in menus.  This happens
in anything using text such as Word, Wordpad, and Internet Explorer.
I was wondering if anyone else has had a similiar problem.  I have been
told that a computer will last longer if it is not turned off.  If this is
true, is using Standby defeating the purpose of not turning off the entire
computer because it stops the hard drive from spinning and also requires the
machine to power back up when it returns from Standby?
Any assistance you can offer will be greatly appreciated.
