How to disable taskbar scroll arrows?

Is there anyway to disable the Windows XP taskbar scroll arrows? I am
striving for the Windows 98 and 2000 taskbar behavior. I'm already
aware of the quasi-related "group similar icons" options.

Thanks, SM

How to disable taskbar scroll arrows?

Right click the Start button, select Properties, Customize, and uncheck Use
Personalized Menus.  You may also want to uncheck Scroll Programs.

Thanks but both are already unchecked. Taskbar scroll arrows are still
present.

I am slowly moving to the realization that there is no way to disable
this "feature". All I want is the Windows 2000/98 task bar behavior.
By upgrading to Windows XP the task bar ended up getting downgraded.
Oh well..

Unchecking both of these options should restore the 98 style start menu.
Try checking them, clicking Apply, then unchecking them.

Otherwise, you may have to be more specific about what you're seeing.

How to disable taskbar scroll arrows?
I think what you don't want is the scrolling effect when you open up your
All Programs list. I am using the "Old" way, although I always used the
scolling effect under windows 98 and 2000. You need to turn off your menu
transitions.

Open Start. (Click), right-click on an empty area of the start menu. Select
Properties. Select Customize. If you are using Classic Start, you need to
uncheck Scroll Programs under Advaced Start menu options. If you are using
Start, go to the Advanced tab, scroll through the list, and uncheck Scroll
Programs.

BTW, this doesn't work for the My Documents or the Control Panel. If any one
knows how to make it work for those as well when using the Windows XP Start
menu, I would sure like to know.

I hope this solves at least part of your problem.

How to disable taskbar scroll arrows?

I think there may be some confusion here. Let me clarify.

Under Windows, each window (or task) that is opened has a
corresponding icon in the task bar. As the task bar gets filled up
with icons, it reduces the size of the icons. With Windows 98/2000,
the icons would gradually reduce in size to fit all the icons in the
task bar. Under Windows XP this behavior has changed. Now when the
number of icons reaches a threshold, two little scroll arrows appear
and are used to scroll through the task bar's task icons.

I have recently "upgraded" to Windows XP, what I want is the Windows
2000 & 98 behavior of the task bar task icons. XP's scroll arrows are
annoying as I have to hunt around (scrolling with the scroll arrows)
for a particular task bar icon. I am fully aware of the "grounp
similar task bar icons option". This only delays having the dreaded
task bar scroll arrows from appearing.

Thanks for all help, SM

Hi,

I haven't found 'that' fix as of yet.  The only workaround I have is
changing the size of the Taskbar buttons.  However, it in no way reflects
the behavior you are looking for.

Decrease Size of Taskbar Buttons (Line 97)

Kelly, FWIW, the size of my Taskbar buttons does decrease when I open more
applications. Of course, after a certain point, they do indeed go into the
Scroll thing that Squirrel is talking about.

The best workaround I have found is to use the Taskbar in the Vertical
position. I can fit 18 open Taskbar muttons on it, then it creates a double
row, meaning I could theoretically open 36. I don't know what it does after
than, but I don't usually work with more than a dozen windows or so. Plus, I
display the full date, have two rows of notification icons, and use a one
row quick launch. Were I to remove these, I would estimate it would be
possible to have 21-22 buttons at 1024x768 on a 17" moniter without going
into wierd things, or even having to resize the buttons.

Hi,
You can get back to the Windows 9X style of the taskbar by unchecking "Group
similar taskbar buttons" in the taskbar properties page. This way you do not
get the scrollarrows and each new window that you open gets added in the
visible area of the taskbar (just like Windows 9X).

Anando,

You are not following the thread here.  That is what he is using and that is
what produces the scroll arrows.  I have not found a way as of yet to
disable the behavior.

Anando,

He didn't sound confused at all.  I offered an edit that would allow him to
have more apps opened/listed 'before' the arrows appeared. He is not using
grouping, thus he clearly meant taskbar arrows and said so.

And yes, (to answer your question) it is by default/design, but so 'were'
the other 400 fixes/workarounds that I have.  :o)

Kelly,
I suppose he is confused about the scrollarrows that appear after the first
line of the taskbar is filled.(See picture)

Because according to his orignal post he said, "This only delays having the
dreaded task bar scroll arrows from appearing." He said taskbar scroll
arrows and NOT scroll arrows on the application buttons. I suppose the
scroll arrows which appear on the taskbar after the first line is filled, is
by design, and it cannot be changed, is'nt it ?

Under Windows XP, is there anyway to disable the taskbar scroll arrows
that occur when many task icons are present?

Yes I am aware of the "Group similar taskbar buttons" option which
will reduce the number of taskbar icons. Regardless, when the number
of icons in XP's taskbar reaches a certain threshold, the scroll
arrows appear. Yes I know this is a "feature", but I prefer the
Windows 2000 style of progressively reducing the size of the task
icons to make them fit.
