 ICS Client Setup

I recently updated to Win XP, which is now connected to a network - with 2
computers running Win 98 SE.

I have set up the Win XP PC as the ICS host.  One of the Win 98 SE computers
can successfully connect to the internet through ICS, however the other will
not.  On the first client I successfully ran the Network Setup wizard, it
then worked immediatly.  On the second client the Network Wizard installed
preliminary files, rebooted and then stopped, reporting that we had to
install network hardware before running the wizard.  We have re-installed
network card and protocols and there is no change.  The network is working
fine.

On either of the client machines, pinging an internet site (using IP address
or name, eg. www.yahoo.com) works fine.  The second client was the old ICS
host before the Win XP computer took that over, but ICS has now been
uninstalled on that machine.

Is there any way we can configure ICS on the second client manually or
convince the wizard that our hardware is actually there?

We've tried altering TCP/IP settings, but to no avail.

Thanks,

Daniel

A possible cause for the Wizard's refusal to run is that the network
card driver program on the second client is improperly written, so the
Wizard doesn't recognize.

You can make the same settings manually that the Wizard would make
automatically:

1. Go to Control Panel | Network | TCP/IP->NIC | Properties and make
these settings:

IP Address: Obtain an IP address automatically
WINS Configuration: Use DHCP for WINS Resolution
   Gateway: remove all gateways
   DNS Configuration: Disable DNS

2. Go to Control Panel | Internet Options | Connections and configure
it to never dial a connection.  Since ICS isn't a proxy server, click
the LAN Settings button and un-check all of the options on that
screen.

Steve,

Thanks for your help, but I have already configured the client in this way
to no avail.  I have set up all the settings to match those on the client
which can browze the internet, but I am still unable to get it working.
It's driving me crazy!

Thanks again,
Daniel

Please post another news group message with more information to help
other people diagnose the problem:

1. Describe what works on the client, what doesn't work, and the
complete text of all error messages.

2. Go to Start | Run | Winipcfg, select the network card, click More
Info, and report what it shows for IP address, subnet mask, default
gateway, DNS servers, and DHCP server.

3. Go to a command prompt, enter these commands, and report the
results:

   ping www.google.com
   ping 192.168.0.1
   ping 216.239.33.100
