 Windows XP Pro - System.sav

My father has recently encountered a problem with his Windows XP machine.
Apparently is was working fine at lunch time, and tonight when he booted up,
he got an error along the lines that \Windows\System32\Config\System was
missing or corrupt.  Reading google, and the the suggestion of the error
message, he managed to use the Recovery option of setup to get a prompt, and
he copied System to System.old and then copied System.sav to System.

Then when the system restarted, it appeared to run setup, and has "39
minutes remaining." A few minutes later it produced the error:

"Setup failed to install the product catalogs."

Microsoft KB Article Q307153 suggests to rename catroot2 to catold.  Anyone

What should his next move be?

Thanks in advance,

 Windows XP Pro - System.sav

Start the operating system from the CD-ROM,

When the computer starts from the CD, the system checks your hardware

and then prompts you to select one of the following options:

To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Press ENTER.

Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.

A box lists your current Windows XP installation, and then the system

prompts you to select one of the following options:

To repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R.

To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing, press ESC.

Press R to start the automatic repair process. After repairing Windows XP,

you may need to reactivate Windows XP, if you changed some hardware.

Back up and save the Wpa.dbl file after successful activation and then manually

restore it after the repair process is finished and after you log on to the computer.
