 valid installation number???

Do you mean the product Key?
If your computer was shipped with Windows XP installed, the Product is
a sticker on the side of the computer.

If you bought Windows XP retail, the Product Key is on the orange
sticker on the back of the CD package.

1.Weird OEM Installation, but valid Win XP Pro Disk

So, I called the people who put together my system and
told them I'm having trouble installing Serv Pack 1
because the PID isn't recognized.  They told me contact
the good people at Microsoft because they're only
responsible for the installation of the OS itself, which
they did, and I need help with the Service Pack.

So, I call Customer Service, who took down the info of
the company who put my system together, told me my PID
was invalid because it was pirated.  However, they
verified that the Product Key I have with the CD was
valid.

Now my question is:

What is the correct way to de-install the OS that is on
my system now, so I could reinstall using the legit CD
(which will enable me to download future svc packs, etc),
and save all the other programs and files I already have
on my hard drive?  Is this a situation where I have to
wipe the whole thing clean and start from a clean slate
(gawd I hope not).
