 Win XP HE (Ntbackup.msi) ??

Hi all,
I see you all got your hands full with the SP1 bullocks, but I have a
different question if anyone can help.
My original hard disk kicked the bucket the other day, and I already got the
replacement drive in place.
Had 3 partitions C, D and E on the original, so I installed WinXP HE from
the bootable CD and made it partition the drive, and format it to the NTFS
format it was originally.

So far so good... now I have a new, {*filter*} XP Home Edition on the new drive.
I named the computer, the administrator the same as on the old drive.

Now back on July 1, 2002 I used the Win XP Ntbackup.msi program to BACKUP my
entire drive onto an external USB Hard Disk, with all my settings and
programs up to that date.  My data was on a second hard disk so that is out
of the picture.

After installing the USB Link CD for the new WinXP to recognize the external
drive, I proceeded to RESTORE the information onto partitions C, D and E...

When asked to reboot the system, all of my icons, program ICONS, quick
launch , and settings were in effect BUT .... when I looked in the
ADD/REMOVE section only a few programs were indicated, and when I clicked on
some of the program icons like MS WORD, it told me that I can only run the
program if it is INSTALLED !!!

Why is this information not getting restored from my complete backup, even
though all the files are in the folders and all the shortcuts and icons
point correctly to the software programs???   What am I missing here?

Can anyone help me with this so that I do not have to re-install 200
software packages, with 2,000 serial numbers and codes???

The backup restored the data, but not the files placed in the original system folder or the entries placed in the original system registry. The programs themselves *must* be installed into the new installation in order to run.

You would have had to create an image of the existing system (not a possibility with ntbackup) and restored it to the new drive.
