 Server Hangup

I run Windows 2000 on my Compac Presario 5WV254 series
computer.  The computer is connected to a Speedstream 2614
DSL router.  There were no problems until recently when
for an unknown reason whenever Windows starts up and I
select IE via desktop icon or otherwise, the browser opens
up with the message "Server Hangup . . . ".  I have to go
to Internet Options via the Control Panel or Tools and
select Connections, LAN Settings, and uncheck the box for
Use Proxy Setting for your LAN and check the box for
Automatically Detect Settings.  After doing so the browser
works.  The problem is this setting doesn't stay put;
whenever Windows starts up the settings have reverted.
There doesn't seem to be a problem with the actual
connection because Outlook Express opens normally and I
can send & receive email before I make any changes to the
Internet Options.  How can I get the change to
Automatically Detect Settings to remain in effect after
shutting down Windows?
