 digitizing old home movies

Is it possible to digitize old home movies WITHOUT sacrificing quality
due to compression (i.e. loss-less).  I also want nearly full screen
with mono audio.  I'm less worried about disk storage conserns.  I own
a Mac 7100AV.  I'm aware of the Radius Spigot's existance, but don't
know anyone who's used it.  Any help or sharing of similar experiences
would be most appreciated...

I new to this field. My interest to digitize old movies in order to edit and
preserve them.

Where can I locate information or tutorials on the merits of the various
transfer media (I plan to use outsource that portion) and what hardware and
software will be required thereafter.
